A bankrupt soul--poem by Shawn Olsonpoem, poetryA poem by Columbus Messenger writer Shawn Olson.
Time was running short
and this old man had to rest;
his life would soon abort.
Standing alone on the bank
he glanced back up the river
and his heart suddenly sank.
He hadn’t really come that far
yet he could barely see the shadows
of any home, face, or guiding star.
He had spent his entire life
ignoring friends, kids, pastors and wife
just to spend every moment he’d had
chasing a few pennies and every fad.
When he kneeled down to look
into the river of no deceit
he saw only a bankrupt soul on a hook
with nothing more than an old torn receipt.
