Steam and Internet Explorer 7

Not long ago one of my machines stopped being able to join our Counter-Strike server at CS.WallWorm.com . I figured that it must be due to my firewall. But even after disabling Norton Internet Security, the computer could not connect. In fact, it could not connect to any servers on my favorites list—though it could connect to other servers.

I re-installed Steam. Still, I could not connect. Steam would get as far as saying "precaching resources” but then simply drop and throw me back to the desktop.

After a little research, I found the problem. This machine was the only machine running Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 Beta. I had installed it to preview the kinds of changes I need to prepare for since my occupation is web development. According to SteamPowered.comIE7 is not compatible with Steam.

I removed IE7 and suddenly everything is back to normal. So, if your Steam game is suddenly unable to connect to your favorite server and you are running IE7, try uninstalling IE7 and go back to Internet Explorer 6 until the final version of IE7 is released.

Any news on when this will be fixed? I could not find anything on the Steam forums or Steam's support page.

BTW: I am using IE7 RC1, and it has the same problems with Steam as Beta2.

I had the same problem with Steam and IE7 Beta 2. After researching a similiar article as this one, I uninstalled IE7 beta 2, rolling it back to IE6. Steam worked perfect again! But, now I have a question: will Steam now work with Microsoft's new realease of IE7 RC 1? http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/default.mspx

yuppers i had the same trouble installed ie7 and steam would just crash to my desktop when i tryed to connect to my fav server but others servers work

i was pulling my hair out

wonder why its dooing this

I talk with the server Admin see if changes to the server have been done

Reply was nope its the same

setting as always

grrrr grrrr grrrrrrrrr

more hair pulling

then outta the blue i connect an talk to a friend

playin cs TOSTER he tells me his internet would not work after installing IE7 so right at next map change wammm crash to desktop again...almost

blad now so kick the PC lol

no don't im kidding

so i fire up IE7 connect to google do some searching and here i am

reading your story an i think dang it why i dint see this early'er when searching IE7 troubles

ooh well i say

TIME to RIP OUT IE7

not an easy task for us fokes that use ccleaner or other temp cleaning programs or have System Restore trouble mine went corupt after completed the IE7 install there was no options to restore back to even know i made 1 right b4 the install so ya that was not an option

but lucky enuff i had the option to remove IE7 in the ADD/remove programs from the controle pannel

so i crossed my fingers an

clicked uninstall some time passed then pooof its say successfully removed IE7 so we reboot

every thing seems ok so i load up what i hope is IE6

then wham BSOD (blue screen of death) oooh nooo

i press the reset button on my pc it reboots windows loads up pops a window saying your system has recovered from a critial error click ok

then it finishes loading and all seems ok untell i try to use some programs an i get mad error every where ok so i try to load my IE witch i hope was now v6 so i go to google it looks like ie6 but the help/about tab still show v7 an im still getting error in some other programs mainly

WININET.dll errors

so i remmeber a site i gave a friend awhile back an i knew it would help me get ie working

Internet-Explorer-corrupted-fix

load some files off the cd an run the shellreg.bat

However, you can reinstall IE in Windows XP by clicking Start, Run and entering the following command:

rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 %windir%Infie.inf

You will need to have your XP CD available.

then i run this .bat

"outlook express could not be started. The application was unable to create font cache object. your computer may be out of memory or your disk is full. contact microsoft support for further assistance. (0x8007000E, 14007)"

I execute the .bat file you have written and it's ok now.

I really appreciate you.

Hello Shawn, I ran your .bat file as well and was once again able to restore the coveted Outlook Express program. Thanks a million!

Stumbled onto this site from a Microsoft search (BING) after fruitless searches on Google (many dead or abandoned threads or just "reformatted in the end" solutions) EEEEK !!

Your batch file did exactly what it says and fixed the dreaded 0x8007000E, 14007. Outlook Express now works| Many thanks David

Hi Shawn,

I'm getting the same following error:

"outlook express could not be started. The application was unable to create font cache object. your computer may be out of memory or your disk is full. contact microsoft support for further assistance.

(0x8007000E, 14007)

The person who submitted this problem didn't mention the .bat file you wrote and had them to execute, or how to execute it.

I would really appreciate any help you can provide with this matter.

It's been so long since I dealt with this problem that I'd forgotten all about it. I don't even have access to the original batch file any more. From what I recall, it was only a problem with an early version of IE7.

My advice at this point is simply to update IE to the latest version.
